A member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community of Arizona faces a first-degree murder charge for the death of a tribal police officer.

Elijah Arthur is accused of using a rifle to kill officer Jair Cabrera, 37, early Saturday morning. He's in custody, along with two other people who were in a vehicle that had been stopped by Cabrera.

About 200 people attended a vigil at the site of the shooting on Tuesday. Cabrera was the first officer who was killed in the line of duty on the reservation.

"We are not going to allow the memory of our fallen officer be lost, as well as the values of our tribal people he stood for," President Diane Enos said at the vigil, The Arizona Republic reported.

Cabrera is being laid to rest on Friday.
