Federal Recognition

Little Shell Chippewa Tribe still hopeful for federal recognition

The Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Montana is closer than ever to gaining federal recognition.

The tribe was denied recognition through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. But Interior Secretary Sally Jewell has ordered a reconsideration.

Additionally, the Obama administration supports S.161, a bill to extend federal recognition to the tribe. The Senate Indian Affairs Committee approved the bill in April and it's been placed on the Senate calendar.
