Oneida Nation sends $11M to county as part of settlement

The Oneida Nation of New York made its first payment to Madison County under a settlement that was recently approved by a federal judge.

The tribe paid $11 million up front to the county. Additional payments will be made quarterly as part of the settlement, which addressed a wide range of land, taxation and other issues.

In exchange for the money, the county dropped a lawsuit that challenged the tribe's land-into-trust application. The county also withdrew foreclosure proceedings as part of a case that was pending before the U.S. Supreme Court.

The case was dismissed on March 26, according to the docket sheet for No. 12-604, Madison County and Oneida County v. Oneida Nation.
