The Mashpee Wampanoag
Tribe of Massachusetts held a council election on Sunday and women continue to represent a majority of the leadership.
Four people were elected to the council for one-year terms. They are: Carlton Hendricks Jr.; Cheryl Frye Cromwell, who is the wife of Chairman Cedric Cromwell; Yvonne Avant; and Winnie Johnson Graham.
“I am proud of our tribal members for turning out in such numbers to exercise their right to vote and affirm the sovereignty of our nation,” Chairman Cromwell said in a press release.
The council has seven women on board, including Vice Chair Jessie “Little Doe” Baird.
