Citizen Potawatomi Nation questions city's taxation stance
Posted: Thursday, February 6, 2014
The
Citizen Potawatomi Nation of Oklahoma is disputing a request to collect taxes on the sale of goods to non-Indians.
Chairman John A. Barrett said the tribe's businesses are not located within the city of Shawnee. That means there is no need to collect the 3 percent tax.
"We bought this land in 1867," Barrett told The Countywide & Sun. "Federal law says it is not in the city. The Oklahoma Constitution exempts our land from taxation."
The city also sent letters to three other tribes, asking them to collect the tax.
