Budget measure offers modest increases for BIA and IHS

Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Maryland), the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and Rep. Hal Rogers (R-Kentucky), the chair of the House Appropriations Committee.

Congressional negotiators announced a 2014 Omnibus Appropriations bill that includes modest increases for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Indian Health Service.

According to a summary, the BIA will receive $2.5 billion in fiscal year 2014. That's $18 million above the 2013 level.

The IHS, meanwhile, will be funded at $4.3 billion. That's $78 million above the 2013 level.

Overall, the 1,582-page bill provides $1.1 trillion for the federal government. It restores some of the sequestration cuts and prevents any shutdowns through 2015.

“As with any compromise, not everyone will like everything in this bill, but in this divided government a critical bill such as this simply cannot reflect the wants of only one party. We believe this is a good, workable measure that will serve the American people well, and we encourage all our colleagues to support it this week," Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Maryland), the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and Rep. Hal Rogers (R-Kentucky), the chair of the House Appropriations Committee. said in a joint statement.

The bill, H.R.3547, is likely to receive a final vote in the House and Senate next week.
