Supreme Court issues long-awaited affirmative action ruling

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday issued its long-awaited decision in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin, an affirmative action case.

By a 7-1 vote, the justices sent the case back to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals without determining the legality of an affirmative action program at the University of Texas. The move led both sides to claim victory.

The Supreme Court will be taking up affirmative action again during its October 2013 term. The justices will hear Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, a case from Michigan.
