Navajo Nation Council considers bill to impose tax on junk food

The Navajo Nation Council is considering a bill to impose a tax on the sale of junk food on the Navajo Nation.

The Healthy Diné Nation Act imposes an additional 2 percent tax on foods like soda, chips, candy and cookies. That's on top of a 5 percent sales tax on food.

A second bill will eliminate the 5 percent tax on fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, water, nuts, seeds and nut butters. Supporters say the changes will encourage more healthy lifestyles.
