House takes up bill to authorize copper mine near sacred site

The
House
will be voting today on
H.R.687
, the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act.
The bill authorizes a land swap between the federal government and
Resolution Copper Mining
. The land that the company will receive will be used for a copper mine near sacred Apache sites.
"The massive, underground block cave mine proposed by Resolution Copper Mining would destroy culturally protected and environmentally sensitive land within the Tonto National Forest," the
San Carlos Apache Tribe
said in a
press release
.
Debate on the bill will last an hour,
according to the House majority leader's schedule
.
