Some tribes offer employment benefits for same-sex couples

Some tribes are offering benefits to employees with same-sex partners.

The Cabazon Band of Mission Indians offered benefits long before same-sex marriage became legal in California. All it takes is some paperwork.

"You always want to have health insurance and all that, so the first thing I did was sign him up here," Paul MacKey, the tribe's director of legal affairs, told The Palm Springs Desert Sun, referring to his longtime partner, whom he later married.

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut also extends benefits to employees with same-sex partners. Same-sex marriage was legalized in the state in 2008 but the tribe's policy began before that.
