Spirit Lake Nation without a leader after tribal court decision

The Spirit Lake Nation of North Dakota is without a leader after a tribal appeals court kept Chairman Roger Yankton out of office.

The Northern Plains Intertribal Court of Appeals blocked Yankton from holding office. But no one stepped up to claim the seat at a council meeting on Thursday, The Grand Forks Herald reported.

Leander "Russ" McDonald was elected chairman at a general council meeting last month but he said he would wait for further action from the court.
