Decision expected to stir interest in Metis heritage in Canada

A landmark ruling from the Federal Court of Canada is expected to increase interest in Metis heritage.

Some 400,000 people self-identified as Metis on the 2006 census. The numbers are expected to increase because Judge Michael Phelan ruled that Metis people should be treated as "Indian" under the Indian Act.

But whether such status will come with any benefits remains to be seen. A 2003 decision from the Supreme Court of Canada recognized Metis hunting rights but it was limited to one community in Ontario.
