The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected a petition in Native Village of Kivalina v. ExxonMobil Corporation.

The Native Village of Kivalina, a federally recognized tribe, sued 24 energy giants in 2008, accusing the companies of contributing to climate change. The tribe says rising temperatures are to blame for erosion along the Chukchi Sea.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against the tribe last September. The court said the tribe's claims must be addressed through the Clean Air Act, not by seeking damages from the energy companies.

Without comment, the Supreme Court declined to hear the case in an order list yesterday.
