Bill requires state to pay Cayuga Nation property tax bill

A bill in New York requires the state to pay the property tax bill of the Cayuga Nation.

The tribe owns land that is not yet in trust. Two counties say they are owed $1.9 million for non-payment of property taxes on that land.

The tribe is going through the land-into-trust process. The final environmental impact statement was issued in October 2010 but the Bureau of Indian Affairs has not made a decision on the application.
