Police officer for Chitimacha Tribe shot and killed on the job

A police officer from the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana was killed on Saturday while responding to an incident just off the reservation.

The officer responded to the report of a fire and was shot and killed on the scene. Two officers from the St. Mary sheriff’s department also were shot.

“He’s a real great guy. Extremely dedicated to his job. Very brave,” Toby Darden, a tribal council member, told the Associated Press. The slain officer's name will be released at a press conference this morning.

Authorities have charged Wilbert Thibodeaux, 48, with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of arson. The second murder charge stems from the death of a man who was in the mobile home that was set on fire.
