Democrat Denise Juneau, the first American Indian to run the Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction, expects to prevail in a recount against Republican Sandy Welch.

The latest, unofficial results show Juneau with a lead of 1,374 votes over Welch. Although provisional ballots haven't been counted, a recount is expected since the difference in votes is less than 0.5 percent of the total votes cast.

“We hoped that Denise would be ahead, and she is, and we’re confident that she’ll remain ahead," Alex Corcoran, Juneau's campaign manager, told The Helena Independent Record. "Denise is ready to keep working as superintendent of public instruction.”

Juneau is a member of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation of North Dakota. She was raised on the Blackfeet Nation in Montana.
