The Rosebud Sioux Tribe of South Dakota plans to submit a land-into-trust application for a sacred site in the Black Hills.

The tribe has signed an agreement to buy nearly 2,000 acres for $9 million. The goal is to protect Pe Sla, a sacred site.

“We will make the attempt" to have the land placed in trust, Vernon “Ike” Schmidt, the executive director of the Tribal Land Enterprise, told The Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

The application is likely to run into local and state opposition.
