Cherokee Nation farmers receive Keepseagle settlement funds

Members of the Cherokee Nation who experienced Department of Agriculture are receiving payments from the $760 million Keepseagle settlement.

The tribe said "millions" of dollars went to Cherokee farmers and ranchers. The number wasn't disclosed but most received checks of $50,000.

“This is something we have diligently worked on for 15 years,” Principal Chief Bill John Baker said in a press release. “It was based on the federal government not fulfilling their promises to Cherokee farmers."

The settlement includes $680 million in direct payments to Indian farmers and ranchers. It also creates a $80 million loan forgiveness fund.
