Cherokee Nation Businesses begins search for a new executive

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma will be hiring a new leader for its economic development corporation.

The board of directors of Cherokee Nation Businesses has begun the search for a new chief executive officer. “It’s going to take awhile ... but you can’t finish if you don’t get started,” David Ballew, who is leading the effort, said at a recent meeting, The Cherokee Phoenix reported.

Ballew said the board needs to find a “strong, Indian business person.” Ideally, the right person is a tribal member, he said.

Former CEO David Stewart left the organization after the election of Chief Bill John Baker. The tribe agreed to pay Stewart nearly $2.7 million in severance.
