Navajo Nation woman seeks class action against loan firm

A Navajo Nation woman is seeking class action status for her lawsuit against a loan company.

Deanna Begay purchased a truck whose financing was provided by Credit Acceptance Corp. of Michigan, The Navajo Times reported. When she missed a payment, the firm disabled the vehicle using a GPS system and a vehicle starter interruption device.

But since Begay was within the boundaries of the reservation at the time, she says the company should have gone through tribal court first. Her contract states that "CAC will take all actions permitted by applicable law" and she says Navajo Nation law wasn't followed.

Begay is seeking a minimum of $5,000 in damages, the paper said.
