The Match-e-be-nash-she-wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians of Michigan, also known as the Gun Lake Tribe, will establish a law enforcement department in 2011.
The tribe plans to hire a director, an officer and an analyst to staff the initial department. The tribe will enter into cross-deputization agreements with local authorities.
“This is normal; this is expected,” John Shagonaby, a tribal executive, told The Allegan News. “The tribe is a government, they are responsible for public safety.”
The tribe has a 147-acre reservation where it is building a casino.
