The state of New Mexico is refunding income taxes to Indian veterans that were illegally withheld for 30 years.
Indian veterans who live on reservations and served in the military between 1977 and 2007 are eligible for refunds. An estimated 7,000 veterans are affected.
"We're trying to correct a wrong," Veterans Services Secretary John Garcia told The Santa Fe New Mexican. "Native Americans have a higher percentage of people serving in the military than any other group."
The state Legislature passed a bill to refund the money after a group of Indian veterans won a lawsuit.
