Markers for the Potawatomi Trail of
Death have been placed along the route that Potawatomi ancestors were forced to walk in September 1838.
In September 1863, more than 850 Potawatomi ancestors in Indiana were marched out of the Indiana at gunpoint. They were forced to walk 660 miles through Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Kansas. More than 40 died along the way.
The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation remains in Kansas. The Citizen Potawatomi Nation was removed to Oklahoma.
