Phillip Harrison, a delegate to the Navajo Nation Council, was sentenced to serve eight weekends in prison after his fourth DWI conviction.
Harrison, 58, pleaded guilty to the most recent charges. He was cited for aggravated DWI, no insurance, failure to stay in his lane and failure to display registered plates, The Farmington Daily Times reported.
"We had lots of people calling us, asking how they can be an example to young people when community leaders are being busted for DWIs and getting off easy," Dolly Otero of Mothers Against Drunk Driving told the paper. "Clearly we're disappointed with the sentence."
Harrison represents two Navajo Nation chapters in Arizona. His DWI incidents occurred in New Mexico.
