A vote on a new constitution for the Blackfeet Nation of Montana has been delayed.

The tribal council voted down a resolution to ask the Interior Department to schedule a June 30 election. Some said the tribe needs more time to explain the changes to its membership.

"My concern was based on calls and people from different parts of the reservation who were not aware of what was taking place," council member Henry Butterfly told The Great Falls Tribune. "No one really explained it to them."

Last June, tribal members voted overwhelmingly to amend the constitution to add executive, legislative, judicial, traditional and ethical branches to the tribal government. A committee spent the past few months developing the new document.
