Pechanga Band announces tentative water deal
The Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians announced a tentative settlement to its water rights in the Santa Margarita River Basin of California.

The tribe and the Rancho California Water District reached the agreement with the help of the Interior Department, according to a press release. Chairman Marc Macarro said the deal resolves the tribe's long-running claims and provides for a stable water supply.

The tribe expects to receive a cash payout as part of legislation that would have to be approved by Congress. The tentative settlement calls on the tribe to direct a portion of those funds to a water project.
