The Montana Attorney General's Office says hate crime charges aren't warranted in an attack against a member of the Blackfeet Nation.
Ron Rides at the Door, a commissioner for Glacier County, was beaten by three white males. Although they made comments about their victim's Indian heritage, the local attorney and the state say the crime was not racially motivated.
The state, however, says the charges against brothers Todd, Brian and Aaron Molenda could be upgraded to felonies. Currently, they are charged with misdemeanor assault.
