Red Lake Nation reports record turnout in 2008

Members of the
Red Lake Nation in Minnesota voted in record numbers on Tuesday and the overwhelming number of votes went to
Barack Obama for president and
Al Franken for U.S. Senate.
A total of 2,249 tribal members cast their votes on the reservation, the Red Lake Political Education Committee reported. That's 125 more than the 2004 election and 800 more than 2000.
In the presidential race, 2,082 tribal members voted for Obama, according to results released by the committee. Only 20 voted for
John McCain.
In the Senate race, 1,983 voted for Democrat Franken. Only 146 voted for
Sen. Norm Coleman (
campaign site).
Franken and Coleman are locked in a very tight race, so a statewide recount is being planned. Franken campaigned repeatedly at Red Lake and other reservations while Coleman was accused of ignoring Indian Country.
