Members of the
Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation in North Dakota voted on Tuesday to hold a secretarial election on tribal enrollment criteria.
The tribe currently defines membership based on lineal descendancy. The secretarial election will determine whether the tribe will switch to a blood quantum standard.
Voters also elected two tribal council representatives. Both races were extremely close -- one candidate won by two votes.
A third council seat was the subject of a primary on Tuesday. The top two vote-getters will compete in a December 2 general election.
