First Nation leaders took big chunk of settlement
Members of the Prophet River First Nation in British Columbia are occupying the tribal office in protest of huge payment that band councilors awarded themselves.

The Canadian government awarded the band $130 million to settle a dispute over land and mineral rights. Each of the 230 band members will receive $800 a month for life thanks to the payment.

But three council members gave themselves an extra, one-time payment of $800,000. They deserve the money because they worked on the settlement for 11 years without pay, the daughter of one council member told CBC News.

Band members have been occupying the office for about a week.
