The Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine will no longer receive quarterly payments from a company that wants to build a liquefied natural gas terminal on the reservation.

The payments are being suspended while state and federal officials review the project. Quoddy Bay LNG of Tulsa, Oklahoma, wants to build the terminal near a sacred site.

Tribal leaders on the Pleasant Point and Indian Township reservations support the project. They have received nearly $800,000 so far from Quoddy Bay.

Some tribal members and environmental groups oppose the terminal. A lawsuit is pending in federal court over a lease that was approved by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
