Lawyer seeks rehearing of Arapaho eagle case

The lawyer who is defending a member of the Northern Arapaho Tribe who took an eagle without a federal permit wants the full 10th Circuit Court of Appeals to hear the case.

A three-judge panel of the court ordered Winslow Friday to stand trial for shooting a bald eagle on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. Friday was going to use the bird for the Sun Dance ceremony.

John T. Carlson, an assistant federal public defender who is representing Friday, said the decision is respectful of Indian religious rights. But he is recommending to his client to pursue an en banc review of the case.
