Northern Cheyenne man sentenced for assault

A man from the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Montana was sentenced to five years in prison for a serious assault on the mother of his child.

Kevin Whiteman, 37, pleaded guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury. He admitted he put Betty Kills On Top's hand on a hot stove and kicked her so hard that she blacked out and needed surgery.

Kills on Top said she forgives Whiteman, who said he discovered Christianity while awaiting sentencing. But Judge Richard Cebull imposed a harsh sentence on Whiteman, noting the severity of the crime, Whiteman's past criminal history and his alcoholism.
