Mildred Loving, interracial marriage figure, dies

Mildred Loving, the African-American and Indian woman who won a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case that struck down laws against interracial marriage, died on Friday. She was 68.

Loving was of Rappahannock, Cherokee and African-American ancestry. She and her husband, Robert Loving, were jailed and fined in Virginia for violating the state's law against interracial marriage. Loving was white.

The couple challenged the law, which was struck down by the Supreme Court in 1967 Virginia was known for its laws that barred people from identifying themselves as Indian. Mixed-race or dark-skinned Indian people were classified as "colored" or African-American.
