Rosebud President: 'Black Hills are not for sale'

"The Black Hills are not for sale," Rosebud Sioux Tribe President Rodney M. Bordeaux said on Monday.

Bordeaux said the tribe does not support efforts by a South Dakota attorney to represent people who want to accept an Indian Claims Commission award for the theft of the Black Hills. The U.S. Supreme Court in 1980 said the Sioux Nation was entitled to $146 million.

The Sioux tribes have so far refused to accept the payment, which has grown to at least $863 million and could even be over $1 billion. But attorney Doug Kettering has met with individual Indians who want a share of the payout.

“Always remember the Black Hills are sacred," Bordeaux said in a press release.
