Settlement reported in Alaska Native abuse case

A Jesuit order has agreed to pay $50 million to settle an Alaska Native abuse case.

The 110 plaintiffs, mostly men, said they were abused as children during the 1960s and 1970s. They lived in rural Alaska villages where priests from the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus served.

The settlement was announced by a lawyer for the plaintiffs. But the church said it was premature, though an e-mail said the $50 million would be paid.

The order doesn't plan to apologize or admit any guilt.
