Jobs still scarce on Tohono O'odham Nation

Young people on the Tohono O'odham Nation in Arizona have few opportunities for jobs beyond the tribal government or the casino.

Unemployment on the reservation has ranged from a high of 25 percent to a low of 14 percent. The rate is currently around 18 percent, nearly five times the rate of nearby Tucson.

A quarter of students at the tribe's school dropped out in 2005-06, making it difficult for them to find well-paying jobs. But even those with an education said the job market is tough on the reservation.

"A lot of us on the nation have degrees, but there's no jobs in our fields," Delia Lopez, a staff dietitian at the tribe's nursing home, told The Arizona Daily Star.
