Washoe youth to put survival skills to the test

Youth of the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California will put their survival skills to work during a four-day trip in the woods.

Since February, about 40 young tribal members have been participating in Project Venture. The program teaches them survival skills by linking them to Washoe culture.

"Every week we learn something," 11-year-old Danielle Bennett told The Reno Gazette-Journal "If you didn't listen, it's your fault if you get lost."

The program connects youth to their heritage, said Chad Malone, a tribal leader. But it has other benefits.

"Ultimately, it's a prevention program," said Liz Garcia, the tribe's Project Venture director. "It's about health and wellness, (preventing) drugs and alcohol."
