Hate crimes suspect expected to reach plea deal

One of the suspects in the beating of a Navajo man is expected to reach a plea deal with prosecutors in New Mexico, his attorney said.

C.L. Carnie, 21, has been charged with beating William Blackie in the border town of Farmington last June. Two other young white males have also been charged in an incident that heightened racial tensions.

The state intends to prosecute the crimes under the Hate Crimes Act. If found guilty, the men could face additional prison time, to be determined by the judge.

Separately, Carnie is facing other criminal charges related to a burglary. His lawyer is working on a plea for that case as well.
