BIA nominee Carl Artman to go before Senate panel

Update: 10:30am. The committee, by a voice vote, unanimously approved Carl Artman's nomination. The entire proceeding lasted less than 30 minutes.

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee is holding a confirmation hearing for Carl Artman as the next assistant secretary for Indian affairs.

Artman is a member of the Oneida Nation. He served as the tribe's general counsel and deal with land-into-trust, land claims, taxation, sovereignty and other issues.

More recently, he's been serving as the Indian affairs solicitor at the Interior Department. He provides legal advice on Indian matters.

The hearing starts at 9:30am in Room 485 of the Russell Senate Office Building. It will be broadcast online at http://indian.senate.gov/public. Artman is the only witness.

Immediately following the hearing, the committee will hold a business meeting. The full agenda follows:
1. Nomination of Carl J. Artman, to be Assistant Secretary–Indian Affairs, U. S. Department of the Interior.

S. 474, the Mark O. Hatfield-Elizabeth Furse Scholarship and Excellence in Tribal Government Act of 2005.

3. H.R. 854, a bill to provide for certain lands to be held in trust for the Utu Utu Gwaitu Paiute Tribe.

4. S. 3648, the Pueblo of Isleta Settlement and Natural Resources Restoration Act of 2006.

5. S. 3687, a bill to waive application of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act to a specific parcel of real property transferred by the United States to two Indian tribes in the State of Oregon, and for other purposes.
