Meth called modern-day enemy to Navajo Nation
Thursday, April 20, 2006
Methamphetamine has become an even bigger problem on the Navajo Nation than alcohol, police on the largest reservation in the U.S. say.
The tribe has made meth a priority by criminalizing the drug and increasing penalties. But the drug is leading to higher rates of child abuse and violent crimes, officials say.
In 2004, a man left his 18-month-old son alone because he was high on meth. The child was found dead. In 2005, a man choked his wife to death after the two had been using meth and drinking.
