A bill to impose the state of Idaho's gas tax on tribes was defeated by Idaho lawmakers on Thursday.
The Idaho House Transportation Committee voted 7-7 on the bill, meaning it will not advance. All of the committee members who have tribes in their districts voted against the bill, citing the benefits tribes have brought to North Idaho.
Previously, Republican lawmakers went to court to force the tribes to collect the tax. A federal judge later imposed an injunction on the state in a case that was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court but rejected.
The Coeur dAlene Tribe, the Nez Perce Tribe and the Shoshone-Bannock Tribe collect their own tax, equivalent to the state tax.
