The top court of the Cherokee Nation has rejected a challenge to the marriage of a lesbian couple.
The Judicial Appeals Tribunal ruled on December 22 that tribal council members had no standing to challenge the marriage of Kathy Reynolds and Dawn McKinley. The court said the councilors couldn't show they were harmed by the union.
Reynolds and McKinley, both tribal members, obtained a marriage license early last year. In response, the tribal council passed a resolution to define marriage as between a man and a woman.
