Couple says mother didn't want son in her tribe

A non-Indian couple in Minnesota says the mother of the boy they adopted didn't want him as part of her tribe or living on the reservation.

The Hofers adopted Christian two years ago. They say his mother, Juanita Good Bird, willingly gave him up to "devoted Christians" who promised a good home.

Good Bird now wants her son, 4, back because the adoption was never formally witnessed by a judge under the Indian Child Welfare Act. Christian is eligible for membership in the Three Affiliated Tribes of North Dakota.
