Reservation rancher wants prairie dog controlled

An Indian rancher on the Pine Ridge Reservation says his efforts to control the prairie dog population are being hindered.

Scott Cuny says the tribe isn't doing enough to address overpopulation of the rodent. He says he poisons the animals but they keep coming back.

Federal agencies that are participating in a poison control program say they don't have authority over reservations. Not many people from Pine Ridge have complained, a forest supervisor said.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe is trying to address the issue, said the chairman of the tribal land committee. The tribe has authorized $46,000 for a poison control program and is seeking $1 million in grants.
