New Mexico tribe sued over disenrollment

Thirteen people who are being disenrolled from Isleta Pueblo in New Mexico filed suit against the tribe in federal court.

The group says their civil rights were violated by their removal from the rolls. The action came as the tribe was distributing $2,000 per capita checks from a land claim settlement. Those who were disenrolled did not receive a check.

The tribe says it is enforcing its 1/4 blood quantum requirement. The 13 people being disenrolled, including a former council member, have a grandparent who is not of Isleta blood.
