Washington tribe buys land around sacred site

The Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe of Washington has purchased 66 acres next to Tamanowas Rock, a sacred site.

The tribe is working with other groups to preserve Tamanowas Rock as a sanctuary. The rock and the surrounding area have been used for centuries for ceremonies and as a lookout.

The rock itself is on land held in private ownership. The tribe hopes to purchase that land in the future.
