Opinion: Mascot names perpetrate racism

"November is American Indian Heritage Month, and while many activities are planned across the nation to honor our heritage, the continued use of racial imagery in the form of Indian mascots remains a source of harm rather than honor.

Much has been made of the potential harm to individual Indians, but potentially greater harm is caused when such imagery influences the dominant society to think of Indians as anachronistic savages.

Picture an Indian in your mind. Do you see Tonto, Disney's Pocahontas or a character from a Hollywood western? Or maybe an Indian mascot from a particular team?"
