Hopi Tribe removes vice chairman from office

The Hopi Tribe of Arizona has removed vice chairman Caleb Johnson from office.

Johnson was accused of "serious neglect of duty" and exceeding his authority. He allegedly sought contracts for himself, tried to stop distribution of tribal funds, interfered with tribal council meetings and failed to sign documents so the tribe could receive federal funds.

Johnson is the second vice chair to be removed from office. His predecessor, Elgean Joshevama, was ousted in March 2003.
