Herseth defeats Diedrich again in South Dakota

South Dakota voters elected Democrat Rep. Stephanie Herseth again on Tuesday.

With all but one precinct reporting, Herseth had 53 percent of the vote. Republican Larry Diedrich only had 45 percent even after polls in recent weeks showed him closing on Herseth.

Herseth was first elected in a special election in June. She replaced Bill Janklow (R), who resigned after he was convicted of felony manslaughter. The state required another election for a full two-year term.

Herseth sits on the House Resources Committee, which has jurisdiction over Indian issues.
